Year 7 Football: Lenham vs Knole Academy

The Lenham Year 7 team faced a tough challenge in their first fixture, with the opposition teacher warning, “Yes, we’re very strong — we’ve already won 10–0 and 7–2 so far!”

Despite Knole’s impressive record, Lenham started confidently, enjoying plenty of possession and pressing high up the pitch. Knole found it difficult to settle, and as Lenham began to intercept passes and grow in confidence, their efforts were rewarded. A powerful strike from Ferguson forced a fine save from the Knole goalkeeper, and Dighton was perfectly placed to slot home the rebound for 1–0.

The hosts were stunned and realised they had a real contest on their hands. Knole continued to dominate possession, but Lenham’s wide players worked tirelessly to preserve the lead heading into half-time.

In the second half, Seb (who was later voted Man of the Match) and the influential Illingworth were outstanding, leading by example as the team defended bravely. Herbert produced several superb saves, while Harwood made crucial tackles to keep Knole at bay.

As the game entered its final moments, Mclaren’s strike went agonisingly close to doubling the lead. From the resulting goal kick, Knole surged forward and earned a corner in stoppage time. Even their goalkeeper joined the attack, heading just wide of the post!

The final whistle confirmed a memorable 1–0 victory for Lenham — an incredible result against a strong and experienced side. Although Seb was named Man of the Match, the award could have gone to any player after such a determined and spirited team performance.
