Lenham 1 - 0 MGS
It was another incredible evening for TLS as Year 9 Boys faced off against the Kent Cup Champions Maidstone Grammar School. Having lost to them 6-0 last season, some of the players were a bit sceptical about our chances and knew they would have to be at their best to beat them.
However, once the whistle blew the team instantly showed they were a match for MGS and begun the game with real intensity. TLS played with passion and commitment which demonstrates the connection between the group.
In a tight game with few clear-cut chances, it was a moment of brilliance from Man of the match Louis as he cut in past two players and buried the ball into the bottom corner. The players celebrated in jubilation down by the corner flag as TLS started to believe this could be their evening.
As the match progressed, MGS started to get on the ball more and began to become more a threat on goal. Our goalkeeper Jensen, showed safe hands all evening and appeared to enjoy the noise from MGS supporters behind his goal. This was his best game for the school as he made countless catches under pressure.
Martin and Charlie in the middle of the park also played their hearts out making countless tackles and interceptions. Henry and Declan also worked tirelessly down the wings and executed the game plan brilliantly. They were selfless in their performance, as they worked back and supported the defence numerous times. Ronnie was up against two very strong defenders, but never stopped running, making life difficult for them and giving us a chance to get up the pitch.
Freddie and Ashton, need to take great credit for coming on in such a difficult game. Both boys settled in well despite the pressure of the occasion. As we approached the end of the game Archie came back on after an excellent first half and provided some additional energy to try and get us over the line.
Harry, Ben and Olly were brilliant and real leaders as the game reached the final 10 minutes. MGS continued to press, with several free kicks, corners and long throw ins. But each one was met with header, a block or a fine save. In the final seconds of the game, MGS appeared to have equalised! But Harry somehow managed to block the ball off the line. The boys celebrated this like a goal. TLS cleared the resulting corner and were crowned champions of Maidstone.
